Dr. Taylor Jansen recently attended the U.S. Swine Health Improvement Plan (U.S. SHIP) program. U.S. SHIP is a producer-led, voluntary livestock improvement program that is aimed at improving biosecurity, traceability, and disease surveillance for swine health. The program has been operated as a pilot program since 2020 and is based on mitigation of African Swine Fever and Classical Swine Fever.

Producers, packers, veterinarians, diagnostic labs, and state & federal officials
Goal
A program that establishes consistent health standards to mitigate foreign animal disease entry into the U.S. and possible disruption to trade (domestically and internationally) that could be caused by the introduction of these diseases.

Participants
Program participants can apply for disease-specific certifications that are recognized across participating states. U.S. SHIP currently offers a certification for ASF and CSF with other certifications in the works.
Enrollment
Up to 38 participating states with 75% of the breeding herd and 68% of the growing pig herd already enrolled.
APHIS is actively transitioning the U.S. SHIP pilot to a codified USDA program.
