On Wednesday, April 12, Senator Joni Ernst visited Guthrie County and a local AMVC sow farm as part of a tour of Iowa agriculture and Farm Bill discussions. Along with Ernst were Iowa Senator Chuck Grassley and Arkansas Senator John Boozman, the ranking member of the Senate Agriculture Committee.
Senator Ernst shared that “the 2023 Farm Bill covers every corner of Iowa Agriculture and I’m pleased Senator Boozman came to Iowa to hear first-hand from the folks this bill impacts. Our state is rooted in agriculture, and our farmers and producers are proud to put food on the table, not only for their own family, but for the world. The Senate Ag Committee has a duty to support the Ag industry and work together to get this bill passed.”
The Senators met with Dr. Josh Ellingson, AMVC partner and veterinarian, in Guthrie Center. Dr. Ellingson shared an overview of AMVC, discussing the company’s history, geographic reach, livestock services, and involvement in several foreign animal disease preparedness programs. He also discussed the biosecurity practices used on AMVC farms to help keep the pigs healthy and prevent diseases.
“We appreciate the senators discussing Iowa pork production with us and visiting a modern-day pig farm.” Said Ellingson “Visits like this one are great opportunities to show our representatives how legislation like the Farm Bill can impact livestock producers and our ability to operate.”
After the discussion, Dr. Ellingson led Senators Ernst and Boozman on a tour of a nearby AMVC sow farm, highlighting the phases of production that take place on a farrowing-to-wean farm. Also attending the tour was Ben Nuelle, Public Policy Director for the Iowa Pork Producers Association, and several staff members for Ernst and Boozman.
