When I was growing up, I wanted to be a vet. That was the plan, the only plan, and I did not deviate from the plan....until college. Being an Iowa girl, of course, I chose to go to Iowa State University. I would major in animal science and international agriculture and add a Spanish minor; I thought I was all set to help people heal their pets and livestock. I dove in with all the confidence of an 18-year old, and surely nothing could change my plans or alter my path – I knew what I was doing. At the end of first semester, however, when the reality of keeping a 4.0, taking organic chemistry (nope), having a job (or two), and trying to have a life set in, I realized it was probably time for a plan B.
Working with pigs was never a thought that crossed my mind. Honestly, I never even took a course in swine science, but somehow I ended up at AMVC working with sows and I can honestly say it’s the best choice I could’ve made! Aside from getting to work with the animals, which is really all I ever wanted as a kid, working with the people at AMVC has been an awesome experience. I’ve met so many amazing individuals, and every one has been willing to share their knowledge and help push me a little further down my path.
I’ve already learned so much about pigs, the swine industry, and people since starting this job. Every day is something new and I’m so excited to see what else I can learn in the coming months and years.
