Greetings everyone! My name is Brittany Shears and I joined the AMVC team as a LDP in January of 2015 after graduating from The Ohio State University with a double major in Animal Science and Agribusiness. Growing up in Cardington, Ohio I was blessed with a loving and supporting family, the best of friends and inspiring community members.
From a young age I always knew that I would pursue a career in the agricultural field, though I was not sure what part I would play amongst the endless possibilities. (Hence the double major- some call it indecisiveness, I prefer to refer to it as optimizing opportunities.) Strangely enough, the swine species were nowhere on my “future dream careers” list. So how did I end up applying, interviewing and accepting a position with a company primarily focused in the pig business? That’s a good question. The best answer I have is that while I was not a huge fan of pigs at the time, I was completely drawn in by AMVC’s motto. After just a few minutes on their website, I knew I wanted to be a part of this company. AMVC gives back to their local communities, looks to the future, advocates for sustainable agriculture and animal welfare and feeds the world. Yes, I knew exactly where my professional career would start, even if it did not fit anywhere on the long list of possibilities I had complied. In short, I would say divine intervention landed me here.
The past ten months have been filled with more experience and knowledge than I ever hoped to gain. The lessons were sometimes hard learned and a bit messy, but what a fantastic adventure it has been! I am excited about the opportunity to share some of what I have learned on the AMVC page and hope to shed some light on an industry that, in the long scheme of things, I have only become recently acquainted with myself.
