POSITION SUMMARY

Responsible for assisting in total management of gilt development, breeding, gestation, and farrowing departments in sow facility for maximized production and profitability through efficient utilization of animals, facilities, and staff.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Manages all daily activities/processes related to iso-wean pig production, in accordance with protocols and procedures established by Management.

Manages financial performance by working with Site Manager to achieve goals, controlling costs, and adhering to previously set budgets.

Develops employees by leading, planning, managing, coaching, and mentoring.

Establishes and maintains open communication with all farm staff, Site Manager, and Production Manager.

Aids Site Manager in administering personnel-related functions such as performance reviews, attendance reporting, vacation/sick leave, disciplinary actions, etc.

Ensures that the farm working environment is safe by providing safety equipment, training, and taking necessary actions to prevent hazardous conditions.

Schedules and prioritizes workload with daily and weekly task sheets.

Monitors and maintains appropriate ventilation and room environments.

Responsible for timely and accurate reporting of records (i.e. feed inventory, culls, utilities, Porcitec, etc.).

Responsible for farm maintenance and cleanliness.

Regular and routine communication with Site Manager.

Responsible for daily Biosecurity policies and procedures.

ADDITIONAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Regular, consistent attendance is essential to the function of this position.

Follows all bio-security measures according to AMVC's Biosecurity Policy.

Follows all Animal Welfare policies and practices and informs management of any violations.

Follows all safety rules and practices and encourages staff to do the same.

Responsible to train and direct staff to keep areas clean and organized.

Responsible for various office cleanup chores on a weekly basis.

Other duties as may be assigned to fulfill responsibilities of this position/barn.

Conducts performance reviews for farm staff.

Accurately orders supplies and meds.

Aids Site Manager in conducting interviews for new hires.

SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Work effectively and proactively with a variety of personalities.

Work effectively, calmly, and respectfully with live animals.

Ability to be a team player and assist other areas as needed.

Must have strong cleanliness habits at all times.

Detailed and organized.

Proficiency in basic math skills and computer.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Work is performed almost exclusively in a hog confinement in rural areas. Hours of work will generally be during regular business hours and alternate weekends. Hours average 45 hours per week. There will be some variation in work hours due to animal care and health, weather, employee shift schedules, special projects, and other concerns.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Standing, walking, and ability to be on feet while on concrete 8 to 10 hours per day.

Frequent lifting of objects weighing 3–50 pounds.

Frequent bending, reaching, squatting, stooping, and kneeling.

Frequent use of one or both hands/arms to grasp, push, and/or pull.

Ability to climb ladder approximately 15–25 feet in elevation.

Occasional bending while lifting/pulling 50–100 pounds of force to move an object with or without the assistance of another person.

Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.

Must be able to print and/or write legibly.

EQUIPMENT / INSTRUMENTS USED

Syringes, needles, power washers, scalpel, feed scoop, sort panels, disinfecting chemicals, computer, fax machines, handheld computers, personal protection equipment such as goggles, ear protection, and face shields.

EXPERIENCE

2+ years of Livestock Experience with High School Diploma/GED Preferred

*Sow farm and leadership experience is required.

TRAININGS

PQA+ and TQA Certified, Biweekly Safety Trainings, Annual Sexual Harassment Training.
