Students at Westhope High School learned about pig farming from a representative from AMVC Management Services, a diversified swine management company that manages Turtle Mountain Pork in Souris. Alicia Humphrey, AMVC public relations coordinator, is a trained Operation Main Street presenter with the National Pork Board and educated agricultural students in Mr. Don Antram’s classroom.
The presentation’s focus was on modern pig farming and what pig farmers are doing to help meet the global demand for food. Humphrey also covered topics ranging from animal housing and care to health and nutrition.
“Pigs have a lot of needs, and pig farmers go through a lot of precautions to make sure their pigs don’t get sick. They are taken very good care of,” commented Westhope sophomore, Dexter Dunham.
Humphrey was excited to speak with such bright students in the community and shed light on the opportunities within the swine field.
“I learned a lot of valuable things about swine from their health to what they eat and where they live. I also learned about AMVC programs that I had no idea about,” said Westhope eighth grader, Andrew Dunham.
Throughout the class period the students interacted by asking and answering questions.
AMVC enjoys being a resource for local students and educating them about the swine industry. North Dakota Sow Center-Turtle Mountain Pork, a 4,800 head breed to wean sow farm in Souris, is 20 miles from the high school. AMVC Management Services is based out of Audubon, Iowa, and manages 115,000 sows across seven states.
