Brett Dunbar of Audubon recently celebrated his ten-year anniversary with AMVC in June of 2022. Over the years, Brett has had the opportunity to work at four farms in the AMVC system. He has been an assistant manager at two of those farms and has completed AMVC’s Leadership Development Program. Today, he works at Newell pig farm, a 5,600-head sow farm near Brayton, IA.
Get to know Brett, learn more about his role, and find out why he chose a career with AMVC!
Q: What is your role within the barn?
A: I am trained in both breeding and farrowing, but I spend most of my time in the breeding barn. I enjoy being able to take my time and concentrate on breeding sows.
Q: What does a typical day at work look like for you?
A: A typical day in the breeding barn begins with daily chores which includes recording barn temperature to make sure the climate is comfortable for the sows, walking the feedlines to make sure each sows has the correct amount of feed, assessing each sow and looking for any that might not be feeling well, and treating those who are not healthy. Once chores are done the breeding team identifies the sows that are in heat and artificially inseminates them.
Q: What do you enjoy most about your job at AMVC?
A: One of the things I enjoy the most about my job is teaching new team members how to effectively care for and breed sows.
Q: Why did you come to work for AMVC?
A: I originally started with AMVC because I was looking for a job and AMVC had an open position. I continue to work at AMVC because of the relationships I have made and the mentors I’ve found. One of my mentors and close friends is my production manager, Dan Weber. I enjoy working for Dan because he invests in you as an individual, takes the time to answer any questions you have, and always asks you how you are doing.
Q: What advice would you give someone who has just started working for AMVC?
A: Don’t get too hung up trying to learn everything right away. There’s a lot to take in, and you don’t have to know everything immediately. Always ask questions. Ten years later I am still learning something new every day!
Q: What do you like to do in your free time when you’re not working?
A: I enjoy spending time with my 10-year-old daughter, Kinsley, and my family. I love to cook and my favorite pork dish to make is pulled pork with homemade BBQ sauce.
