Background of the Company:

VRI is a local Ames, IA company established in 1993 that has become an industry leader in the conduct of innovative research in the support of the animal health industry. The company executes research projects on behalf of biological/pharmaceutical firms in support of products (vaccines, injectable pharmaceuticals, feed grade pharmaceuticals, water delivered pharmaceuticals, and others) used in the livestock industry. The majority of the projects are conducted for the support of products in the swine industry. Projects are conducted in a federally classified biosafety level 2 research facility.

Job Description:

The animal research technician position is a unique research opportunity directly involved in the daily conduct of a wide range of projects, many of which are based around the control, mitigation, and prevention of infectious diseases. The duties include but are not limited to the following: daily feed and care of study animals, data collection and recording, sample collection (blood, feces, nasal swabs, body temperature, tonsil swabs, etc.), daily observation of animals for clinical signs related to specific diseases/test articles being researched, cleaning and power washing of animal rooms, adherence to biosecurity protocols. Hiring for full and part time position. Full-time position with daily work hours of 7:00AM -3:30PM and alternating weekend hours. Part-time hours flexible with alternating weekend hours.

Qualifications:

Experience with livestock is not necessary. A willingness to learn, attention to detail, and ability to work as part of a team are the most important qualities we are looking for in a prospective employee. This is a somewhat physical position and the job applicant should be capable of doing physical activities such as: lifting 50 lbs bags of feed, snaring/restraining swine, lifting pigs. Legible handwriting and a current driver’s license are a must. Job offers are contingent upon background check and drug test.
